I tried some headphones in the computer in every plug but still no joy. I’ve seen cases of the Web Cam causing this problem. Realtek is the on board sound system. Sound works on Skype also. I just installed Windows 7 and my soundcard no longer works. Throws them pretty quick, within 30 minutes. If you have for sure tried using working headphones in each of these ports without any results, we can be pretty sure that the problem lies with your operating system somewhere, which is good because that means it’s probably not faulty hardware.

I will report back dell xps 8300 audio if I can. I recently ran a troubleshooting program and it says that my speakers are not plugged in but they plainly are. Make sure it shows the sound device as the RealTek HD Audio assuming you have the standard integrated – on the motherboard audio l If it shows something else such as the generic “HD Audioi Codec” that Windows installs that is most likely the problem.
I had downloaded and installed xpps latest version of Realtek Audio over a year ago, when Dell xps 8300 audio still had sound.

Once I knew that the hardware was OK, it was just a question of tracking down what was blocking the Realtek output. The fix was stable after both a warm reboot and a cold restart. You are dell xps 8300 audio up there with the experts. No further issues since then.

My mistake Fireberd, thanks for the fast response. RealTek is just the built-in audio hardware for your computer and I suspect that your second bullet point “High definition audio device” is referring to that.

For now I am going to leave it as is and when I get some time, still have to repipe the condensation flow from my furnace, I will tinker with it.
